The Meatball and Wine Bar

135 Flinders Lane, Melborne

To my dear friend Nicole.

If you will ever need to make someone you care about feel special, take them to the Meatball and Wine Bar. Buy them some sliders, share a few plates of balls, let them choose the desert, have a few wines.

What's in these balls? I think the main ingredient is happiness, some love, a sense of humour and a little bit of passion for good food.

Meatballs are a comfort food for me.  This place is a winner; both comfy and stylish, with just a hint of New York and a touch of class. A real Melbourne gem.

France, me and the Lonely Planet guide

'God gave us the gift of life. It is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living.'
Voltaire

I was always attraced to France, the idea of 'the gift of living' which they seem to understand so well.  I wanted to take my time and slowly get to know it too.  So, I had five weeks, a flight to Paris and a train ticket down south.

A friend said, take a Lonely Planet guide, you will need it. Very skeptical, I thought, carrying around that heavy book is not a good idea, I prefer to travel light.

It is now a year since my trip. I came to France attracted to it, and I am still completely in love.
And as for that book, I used it. It was my guide to the gift of living.

After the Tears

9B Gordon Street, Elsternwick, Melbourne

I was certain I know what comes after the tears, as far as vodka is concerned. You move between the lover and the fighter state of mind one little shot at a time. Steaming boiled potatoes, some herring, a bottle of vodka, and you let go of your fears and become someone else. Highly recommend, but the memory of the night before in the morning after could cause some pain to an unprepared mind.

Don't think of me badly, in my respectable years I can hold my drink. And hold a drink I did at After the Tears. A shot of blackcurrant vodka and dumplings, forgive me my Russian friends, Polish sophistication wins me over.

I will come back for more, to find out what really comes after the tears.
